About Me & DownEast Diaries

Finding warmth in the glow of family and Maine’s magical holiday lights. Moments like these remind us of what really matters.

Hi there! I’m Brandy—(I’ve also been called Brandy-Nanny-Mom by the same child who couldn’t quite figure out what my name was—an identity crisis I fully embraced with laughter) the heart, hands, and messy bun behind DownEast Diaries. I’m a mom, a grandma, a dog lover, and someone who’s completely smitten with Maine’s endless beauty. If you’re anything like me, you’ve discovered that life often comes with challenges that don’t fit neatly into a Hallmark card. This blog is where those stories find a home, with a little honesty, some hard-earned lessons, and the healing power of Maine’s great outdoors.

How DownEast Diaries Came to Be

DownEast Diaries started as a way to make sense of my own ups and downs—supporting a loved one through mental health struggles, finding new rhythms as a mom and grandma, and leaning on nature when life got overwhelming. (Spoiler alert: Maine’s lakes and lighthouses make excellent therapists.) It’s grown into a space where I can share stories of resilience, tools for growth, family connections, and reflections that I hope inspire a little hope and maybe the occasional laugh.

Whether you’re looking for a shoulder to lean on, a bit of wisdom, or just someone to say, “Yep, it’s normal to drink coffee in a kayak,” you’ll feel welcome here.

What DownEast Diaries Is All About

This blog is like a cozy patchwork quilt of life’s major themes, stitched together with love, Maine sunsets, and a smidge of chaos. Here’s what you’ll find:

  • Mental Health & Healing: Stories of resilience, coping, and the tools that help you keep putting one foot in front of the other (even when that foot steps in mud).
  • Family Life & Connection: The joys, lessons, and occasional hilarity of parenting, grandparenting, and life with pets. (Let’s just say my dogs could write their own memoirs.)
  • Maine Adventures & Nature: Exploring hiking trails, kayaking quiet lakes, and sitting by the shore when the world feels too noisy.
  • Personal Growth & Reflections: Honest thoughts on life’s twists and turns, small victories, and finding joy in the moments that often go unnoticed.

Each post is a piece of my journey, but it’s also an open invitation for you to find your own way toward healing, connection, and growth.

A Little Secret About This Blog

Maine’s natural beauty is woven through every word like a tidal current pulling you toward peace. Whether I’m meandering along a forest trail, paddling across glassy water, or sharing a chuckle with my grandkids while the dogs run circles around us, nature is at the center of it all. Let’s just call it my reset button—and I’m here to share it with you.
